The Story of Bentleigh Early Child Education Co-Operative
1977: It all begins
Bentleigh Early Child Education Co-Operative, known affectionately as BECEC, the “Co-Op” or previously BFCCC, has been a source of cherished memories for the Bentleigh and surrounding community for over 40 years. It began in 1977 when a group of passionate ladies aimed to create a supportive playgroup and drop-in centre for stay-at-home mothers. Starting in private homes and local venues, it provided a vital connection for isolated mothers, fostering friendships and sharing parenting information. For children, it offered a place of independence, belonging, and early socialization.
We celebrate the wonderful history of our long-standing childcare centre with gratitude to the founding ladies, past and present staff, and families. Our co-op’s journey is marked by heartwarming stories of early beginnings, including the formation of the co-op in 1979, receiving a government grant in 1979 which enabled the purchasing of our house at 134 Brewer Road in 1980, and completing the first set of renovations in 1983.
2024: The Next Chapter
In 2019 and 2020 BECEC was awarded grants of over one million dollars from the Victorian Building Authority, through the Department of Education in order to renovate our ageing building. This renovation will be completed during 2024 and during this time BECEC is temporarily located at “Rainbow House” next to Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School. We are grateful to the Tucker Road Bentleigh Primary School Community for the opportunity to make this our home for the year.
BECEC has been a safe, nurturing and loving place for children and their families for over four decades. It is very often referred to as a “home away from home” by all parents who choose it for their children. We are so excited for what the future holds as we rebuild our space on Brewer Road.
